Tillotts is a globally-oriented Specialty Pharma with expertise in lower gastrointestinal fields. Tillotts offers products for the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), as exemplified by Asacol®, as well as Colpermin® for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Tillotts has built a strong relationship of trust with Zeria since concluding an agreement for the in-licensing of Asacol® in Japan in January 2004.

Asacol®, Tillotts’ core product, which got approval in Switzerland in 1984, is now employed as a treatment for IBD in over 60 countries worldwide.

By making Tillotts a subsidiary, Zeria has gained the rights to Asacol® in over 50 countries worldwide including Japan as well as in Europe and the Middle East, except for eight countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Plans are in place to enhance the value of this product and to accelerate efforts to strengthen the product line extension for further growth.

Zeria, which focuses on in gastrointestinal fields in the Ethical Pharmaceuticals business, can expect to reap the benefits of synergies by strengthening its product pipeline targeting the lower gastrointestinal tract through Asacol® and its line extension. In the Consumer Healthcare business, new OTC drugs (direct OTC), such as Colpermin®, and other European traditional herbal medicines, are planned for development.

By making full use of Tillotts’ sales network, Zeria will be able to expand its global business in Ethical Pharmaceuticals, OTC drugs and new drugs under development.

Tillotts is aggressively promoting a strategy to strengthen its sales system for Asacol®. Tillotts is achieving favorable sales of its products through a network of its affiliates, licensees and distributors.

Sales and profit have expanded as a result. Tillotts repatriated the marketing rights to Asacol® in some European countries, that is, in the five Nordic countries (Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland) as well as the three Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) in 2009, and in the Czech Republic in 2010. Tillotts also started to sell mesalazine under different trade names through affiliates in Ireland (in 2005) and in the United Kingdom (in 2010).

The key point underpinning Tillotts’ growth strategy is to enhance the value of Asacol®. Tillotts has been promoting Asacol® 800mg Tablets since the product’s entry into the market in 2002 in addition to developing next-generation Asacol® products as part of its strategy to promote differentiation from competitors’ products.

As a result of the launch of Asacol® 800mg Tablets and the shift to a direct sales system, net sales of Tillotts-Asacol® and other mesalazine products increased 10-fold between 1996 and 2010 and are recording an average annual sales growth rate of 18%.

Tillotts intends to make substantial investment in R&D and strengthen the management foundations toward realizing further growth in its global business.
