In Ethical Pharmaceuticals, we are enhancing our new drug pipeline through developing our own original drugs and forging strategic alliances together with focusing on life cycle management that includes adding new dosage forms and indications to existing drugs.
A particularly important therapeutic area is the gastrointestinal field. Many of our products have earned high acclaim, including Acinon® Tablets 75mg and 150mg, a histamine H2 receptor antagonist, gastric/duodenal anti-ulcerant and reflux esophagitis agent; Promac® Granules 15% and D Tablets 75, a zinc containing anti-ulcerant; Marzulene S Combination Granules, Tablets 0.5/1.0ES, an anti-inflammatory anti-ulcerant; New Lecicarbon® Suppositories, a laxative; and Visiclear® Combination Tablets, an oral bowel cleansing agent. In 2009, with the addition of Asacol® Tablets 400mg, an ulcerative colitis therapy, we offer a full lineup of gastrointestinal drugs as we strive to firmly establish a position as “Zeria, your gastrointestinal specialist.”
In other fields as well, we are supplying excellent products that meet medical needs, including Landel® Tablets 10, 20 and 40 for hypertension and angina pectoris; Peon® Tablets 80, an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug; Ancer® S.C. Injection 20µg, an anti-leukopenia after radiotherapy; and Avitene® and Syringe Avitene®, an absorbable topical hemostat. |
| Highly Detailed MR Activities Support Leading-Edge Medical Fields |

To ensure that our pharmaceuticals are always used correctly, it is essential to promptly and appropriately provide information to medical professionals, mainly physicians and pharmacists. This crucial role is entrusted to our medical representatives (MRs).
Zeria has assigned MRs throughout Japan. While maintaining close cooperation with specified distributors (specialized medical product wholesalers), these MRs carry out ethical pharmaceutical support activities.
Our MRs also provide up-to-date information on findings, characteristics and proper usage of our products, mainly to medical professionals at university hospitals and major hospitals as well as general practitioners. Zeria was a frontrunner in promoting the introduction of information technology (IT) for handling pharmaceutical data. To this end, we built the proprietary Ark System for the real-time provision and collection of information and knowledge sharing. At the same time, we are enhancing efficiency and convenience via Internet-based e-promotions. On our “Gastrointestinal Online Site,” a useful online portal for medical professionals, we provide information on the efficacy and safety of our main products and on the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
In collaboration with medical professionals, we also host workshops, symposiums and seminars, while actively providing journals and other literature. |

| Establishing Asacol® as a Pillar of the Ethical Pharmaceuticals Business |

For the fiscal year ending March 2012, a principal task will be to position Asacol® as a pillar of the Ethical Pharmaceuticals business. In working toward this objective, we will concentrate our sales competencies to rapidly establish markets as soon as possible while also raising profitability. Moreover, as we gear up for the launch of Z-338 (predetermined product name: Acofide®), the world’s first functional dyspepsia agent, we will increase and strengthen staff in the Ethical Pharmaceuticals business.
Following the abolishment of time limitations for prescriptions in January 2011, Asacol® has significantly expanded its share of the Japanese market for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and its market share has now surpassed 20%. Building on this momentum, we will aim for a further large expansion of sales of Asacol®. In January 2011, we held a seminar commemorating the first anniversary of the launch of Asacol® Tablets 400mg.
The seminar featured the participation of physicians from throughout Japan who specialize in the lower gastrointestinal tract and was also attended by invited guest Dr. Stephen Hanauer, of the University of Chicago, one of the world’s foremost authorities in the field of ulcerative colitis treatment. Numerous participants expressed their hopes for seeing Asacol® become a leading worldwide ulcerative colitis therapy in a clinical setting. We are co-marketing in collaboration with Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd. to create markets to rapidly secure a 50% market share.
We will emphasize the unique features of the H2 receptor antagonist Acinon® that other H2 blockers do not have, such as its gastroprokinetic effect and salivary secretion effect, and propose to health professionals that they prescribe it to patients with symptoms such as an upset stomach or heartburn.
For Promac®, a zinc containing anti-ulcerant, we will emphasize its healing properties through zinc (a different action mechanism than found in other products) and its effectiveness as an anti-ulcerant that realizes qualitative improvements in ulcer treatment.
Regarding Visiclear®, an oral bowel cleansing agent for colonoscopy, in January 2011 we launched an improved preparation that alleviates the problem of insoluble elements that remain in the intestinal tract. In addition to existing patient acceptance and high cleansing effects, we will strongly emphasize the enhanced visibility during colonoscopy that is made possible by the use of this improved preparation.
By marketing a lineup of gastrointestinal drugs covering the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts, we will actively approach gastrointestinal medical specialists as “Zeria: your gastrointestinal specialist.” |
